Interdisciplinary Centre for Pietism Research

Who we are

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Pietism Research (IZP) at MLU is a unique institution dedicated to the study of Pietism and related currents of Christianity in the context of religious transformation processes from the early modern period to the present. Since its founding in 1993, the IZP has bridged the gap between university research and the Francke Foundations, which, as a significant institution for the history of Pietism, possess outstanding archives and collections. Beyond its own research projects, the IZP sees itself as an institution that has been networking researchers nationally and internationally for decades, raising awareness of their work – both via academic venues and through activities for a more general audience. This is achieved through conferences, lecture series, workshops, and mentoring for young researchers.

Vertrauen. Lyrik und Briefe von Schriftstellerinnen im 18. Jahrhundert

Vortragsreihe von IZP und IZEA im Sommersemester 2026: Vertrauen: Sicherheit im Ungewissen? Funktionen einer sozialen Ressource

Schriftstellerinnen des  18. Jahrhunderts wie Anna Louisa Karsch und Johanne Charlotte Unzer  dichten Oden und anakreontische Lyrik voller Selbstvertrauen und  Lebensfreude. Luise Gottsched besingt ihre glückliche Ehe, Louise  Brachmann ihre treue Liebe und Karoline Rudolphi ihr Gottvertrauen. Im  Zentrum des Vortrags stehen Zeugnisse weiblicher Haltungen der  Zuversicht und Lebensbejahung, einer Poetik der Autonomie. Am Rande geht  es jedoch auch um blindes Vertrauen, das von Frauen im 18. Jahrhundert  erwartet wurde. An Sophie von La Roches Roman Geschichte des Fräuleins von Sternheim lässt sich beispielsweise ablesen, wie der Herausgeber Christoph Martin  Wieland ihr Vertrauen missbraucht hat, um Frauen nachdrücklich und  öffentlich in ihre Schranken zu verweisen. Vergleichbare Verhältnisse  ergaben sich zwischen Karsch und Mendelssohn oder Unzer und Krüger.  Weibliche Zuversicht erscheint damit nicht nur als Ausdruck innerer  Stärke, sondern eingebettet in ein Spannungsfeld aus gesellschaftlichen  Erwartungen und männlicher Einflussnahme.
